RAF Typhoon jets have joined forces with French aircraft in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.

The site, located using surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a series of entry passages leading to the depot... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over significant areas in Iraq and Syria until 2019.

"This action shows the UK's leading role, and resolve to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its military defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of our armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. says IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 militants in Iraq and Syria.
