Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a prominent honors show nears, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to acknowledge unsung work and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are board games, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these six categories successfully include many game types, and you can find room for most games within them.

Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: the architectural riddles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything during that awards season
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience got ignored recently
  • Just some brain-teasers scraped into niche award types

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles in the world maintaining this status for many years.

The legendary block-stacking game competes with well-known building titles competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of the video game form. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. Don't make them wait decades.
