Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in utilizing video review systems.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.
Players are granted the right to contest particular rulings made by the official, following the practice already in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the centuries-old tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to re-examine other decisions, including:
- If a ball has double-bounced.
- If a ball made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is no cap on the number of challenges a competitor can ask for.
Practical Application
An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire viewed a video and ruled Draper was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to Medvedev.
Wider Implementation
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Additional Innovations
A further change at The Championships this year involves the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with precisely a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
